Two Members Honoured by the Queen

Two Auckland Justices of the Peace have been named in today’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. 

Mrs Anne Farrington, JP, from Birkenhead becomes a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to women. She has been involved with Soroptimist International since 1975 at local, regional, national, federation, and international levels and helped lead the work of the Betty Loughhead Soroptimist Scholarship Trust, which provides scholarships for second-chance education for women later in life. Mrs Farrington was a founding member of the Birkenhead Heritage Society in 1979. Mrs Farrington and her husband presented an old villa to the Society, now renovated as a local museum and named Farrington House. She has also been involved in Women’s Fellowship of All Saints Anglican Church in Birkenhead.

Mrs Ana Maria de Vos Sanchez, JP, of Epsom, receives the Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for services to ethnic communities. She has coordinated a range of events such as exhibitions, stage performances, festivals, the annual Multicultural Expo, and the North Shore Lakeside Multicultural Festival, now in its 20th year. An exponent of Latin American dance she has been a teacher and performer of Flamenco – Spanish dance, Chilean Folk dance, and has supported the Auckland Dutch dancers. She has been involved with other performing dance groups, music competitions and the Music Association of Auckland and, as well as assisting immigrants, she has taught Basic English skills to refugees. Mrs Ana Maria de Vos Sanchez supports Latin American families in New Zealand, has served on Citizen Advocacy Auckland, and has assisted victims of domestic violence through Shakti Asian Women’s Centre in Auckland.
