Two Auckland Justices of the Peace are named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Mrs Marie Quinn is made a member of the Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to business and the community while Mr Sun-Ha Hwang of Henderson receives the Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for services to the Korean community.
On behalf of all members of the Association, President Colin Davis, has congratulated both Mrs Quinn and Mr Hwang on receiving recognition for their work.
The President says Auckland members will also be pleased to note three other awards in the same list.
The Honourable Justice Ronald Hansen, QC, our Association's appointed Patron, has been made a Companion of the Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to the judiciary.Judge Hansen has recently retired from the High Court.
Judge Jeremy Philip (Phil) Gittos was made a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order (QSO) for services to the judiciary. “Judge Gittos is held in very high esteem by our Association and in particular the Judicial JPs,” says Colin. “As Liaison Judge he was well respected and a friend of Justices of the Peace and of the Auckland Association”.
“The other J.P. that Aucklanders will be particularly pleased to see in the List is Anthony (Tony) Israel of Taupo who has the distinction of his citation saying ‘for services as a Justice of the Peace’, very apt in this year, The Year of the J.P. Although he lives in Taupo, Tony is a member of our Association. As well as many years’ membership on local and regional organisations, Tony followed in his late father’s footsteps in 1997 and became President of the Royal Federation.
“Harry Israel, Q.S.O., was President of our Association for 8 years,” says Colin Davis, “and for 3 years he was Northern Regional representative”. The fact that both father and son have served as President of the Royal Federation is unique and Tony’s name in the latest list now means both father and son have been honoured by the Queen. Tony has been a J.P. since 1977 and receives the Queen’s Service Medal (Q.S.M.).
