Members will have the opportunity to hear Billie Jordan of Waiheke Island at the Association’s May luncheon.
Billie’s behind what the Guinness Book of Records says “is the world’s oldest dance group”, a bunch of senior citizens, who took the world hip-hop champs in Las Vegas by storm! Billie will entertain our members at the luncheon, tracing the story how Waiheke pensioners aged between 65 and 95 took a new lease on life, convincing them to take up hip-hop, persuading them to persevere at practice and then to take their act to perform on the world stage! "Hip-Op indeed!"
This was no mean feat. One member is legally blind and partially deaf, another uses a mobility aid while one woman is profoundly deaf. Walking sticks are common. Two members have had major heart surgery, many have artificial knees and hips, and all members have arthritis! But they do extraordinarly well for a group of seniors with no previous dance experience. Billie Jordan’s story of entrepreneurial leadership has to be heard… starting on Waiheke after her “escape” from earthquake-torn Christchurch.
