Briefs – March Council Meeting

Ric Carlyon - Wednesday, March 14, 2018

Notes from today's March meeting of the Council of the Auckland Justices of the Peace Association held today:

Regional Representative
Following Pat Samson’s elevation to Vice President of the Royal Federation of Justices Associations, moves are underway to fill the office he vacated, that of Auckland Regional Representative. Pat’s successor is appointed by the Board of the Federation and it’s understood it wishes to move quickly to fill the gap.

Yellow Pages
There’s growing appetite to follow Auckland’s long-established policy to curtail lists of JPs in the Yellow Pages. Keeping the names up to date is a major task, with examples of names remaining as “current” long after the JP has died.  There’s a preference for “Find a JP” on-line, websites showing Service Desks and, possibly, an 0800 phone number to assist people to locate a Justice.

Appointments
Council, at its meeting today, seconded Yvonne Hawkins as a Council member. Yvonne is well known, especially in southern districts, and as a former trainer, and brings wide experience and skills. Yvonne is looking forward to serving on the Support Groups and Service Desks Committee and she’s also agreed to be Hub Manager for Central West as well as South. Also from today, Council Member Owen Goodwin has agreed to be Hub Manager for Lower North.

Hub Training Sessions
These were mentioned at today’s meeting – there are 8 on the mainland (Waiheke has already had theirs) between April 7th and May 12th, some on Saturdays, some on Sundays and with a range of session times. Members can attend any one of the meetings: the content’s the same at each and attendance counts towards accreditation. See News item, 27 February, for details of all Hub meetings.

Accreditation
Time goes fast when you’re having fun as a JP… and those “early adopters” of accreditation will find that quite soon they will need to seek re-accreditation.  The same eligibility applies – the online test plus attendance at training sessions.

Statistics
Moves are underway by Royal Federation to electronically record and process JP data from District Courts. Auckland Association welcomes this. As has been signaled for some time, it’s hoped collection of attendances etc at all 70 of our Service Desks can be done on-line, integrated with our new website now in development. Meantime, data is being collected and processed by Council Member Wallis Walker and, in short, the figures show we have an expanding business!

Annual Luncheon
Social Convenor, Council Member, Sherryl Wilson advised there are already more than 20 reservations for the Association’s Annual Luncheon… within a day or two of it being announced. It’s to be held on Sunday 20th May 2018 at Quality Hotel, Gladstone Road, Parnell, with guest speaker Siouxsie Wiles, microbiologist and science communicator. She’s Head of the Bioluminescent Superbugs Laboratory at the University of Auckland and was also one of the three finalists in the New Zealander of the Year Award this year.
